The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CPRD) and its Optional Protocol was adopted on 13 December 2006 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, and was opened for signature on 30 March 2007. In 2009, the Republic of Serbia ratified the CPRD and the Optional Protocol signed in 2007.

The state parties that ratified the Convention committed that will work on diminishing discrimination towards persons with disabilities, that they will work on inclusion of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society. Ratifying the Convention, the state parties committed that they will improve their national legislation in line with the CRPD.

On the Third Conference of the States Parties, 1-3 September 2010, New York, a representative of Serbia was elected in the UN expert body for monitoring of implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
